Five Reasons to Look for a Job in a Small Town

A lot of travelers aim to find work in Australia and New Zealand’s bigger cities like Sydney or Auckland thinking their chances of landing a job are better. Although there are plenty of jobs available in cities, there are also thousands of people just like you looking for the exact same job.  I’m here to tell you to look elsewhere.  Little rural towns have been giving Working Holiday Visa holders jobs for years and majority of those workers end up happier than those living in a city.  The team at Travel Hooligan went this route and we couldn’t have planned it better.  Living in a small town was one of the best decisions of our lives.

Reason #1- Give me the money honey.

This doesn’t need much of an explanation.  A lot of regional jobs include accommodation with your pay, or it is significantly discounted.  Even if your housing isn’t included, it’s usually a hell of a lot cheaper than living in a city.  Depending on the company, hours are usually in abundance, so you can work as much or as little as you want making it very easy to make major moola.  There are plenty of cheap extracurriculars you can take up as well, such as surfing or hiking depending on the terrain.  So instead of all your hard-earned money going to nights out and fast-food, it’s put in the bank so you can continue your travels.  Cha-ching.

Reason #2- Friends become your chosen family.

I don’t know what I would’ve done without the group of friends I met while living in a small beach town.  We all stuck together through thick and thin and I have no doubt that they are my friends for life.  If I asked, I bet we would all get matching tattoos.  You will meet your new best friend, that crazy South American, and maybe your next love.  So many great memories are made living in a small town because there are no obstacles in your way.  You have each other and the environment and because of that, life becomes much more richer.

Reason #3- There’s always opportunity to find more work.

I never had a hard time finding work in a small town.  Once I got my first job, it was as if the sea parted and jobs started to pour in.  If you prove yourself to be a great and reliable worker, a lot of managers know people elsewhere that are looking for workers and will recommend you.  I had plenty of friends work a summer season in the Southwest and chase the sunshine North in the winter.  They had been given great references and showed up with a job waiting for them.

Reason #4- You could get sponsored.

Sponsorship is like getting a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.  So many opportunities await you if you get a company to sponsor you.  Not only will you be able to stay in the country for at least another year, you will have the opportunity to become a resident.  If you become a resident you can come and go as you please, work for any employer, and in some cases you can work in other countries without having a working visa!  BINGO.

Reason #5- You are off the beaten track.

A lot of regional or seasonal work can be found on the coast, at resorts, and in the middle of nowhere.    You will be immersed in an area that is not usually on the tourist track, which makes it all the better.  It’s a real life experience living in a local town, and enjoying a part of a country you probably wouldn’t have visited if you didn’t take the job.  I lived in a small beach town with a population less than 5,000, where the gas station was only open until 7 and the grocery store opened at 8am and three hours from an actual city…and I loved it.
